Australia sues Facebook for breaching the privacy of over 300K Australians in the Cambridge Analytica scandal

Facebook could face millions of dollars in fines over allegedly breaching the privacy of over 300,000 Australian citizens caught up in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The Australian information commissioner Angelene Falk has alleged Facebook committed serious and repeated interferences with privacy in contravention of Australian privacy law because data collected by Facebook was passed onto the This is Your Digital Life app by Cambridge Analytica for political profiling, which was not what it was collected for.

Data included people’s names, dates of birth, email addresses, city location, friends list, page likes and Facebook messages for those who had granted the app access to the messages.

“We consider the design of the Facebook platform meant that users were unable to exercise reasonable choice and control about how their personal information was disclosed,” Falk said.

“Facebook’s default settings facilitated the disclosure of personal information, including sensitive information, at the expense of privacy.”

Google Assistant will help you apply for a job

I’m interested to see how many other companies will use Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa in this and similar ways.

“Apply Thru” helps people take the first step in applying to work at the massive fast-food chain. In the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the U.K., users can simply say “Hey Google, talk to McDonald’s Apply Thru.” Over time, the company says that “Hey Google, help me get a job at McDonald’s” will also work.

Once the app has been opened, it will ask the applicant for a few basic bits of information such as their name, job preferences, a phone number, and also their location to find the nearest restaurant. Once those steps have been completed, a text message will be sent to finish the application.

McDonald’s “Apply Thru” is available on Google Assistant via your smartphone, a Google Home speaker or smart display, and also the iOS app.

Lifesaving drone saves two stranded Australian swimmers

Two Australian teenage boys were rescued by a new lifesaving drone while lifeguards were nearby training to use the device.

The two swimmers, aged 15-17, had got into difficulties off the coast of Lennox Head, New South Wales.

As soon as the lifesavers were alerted the boys were in difficulty, they sent the drone to drop an inflatable flotation device. The teenagers made their way safely to shore.
